Clothes - Donate it, don't dump it!

Fact: As our fashions change, children grow or rooms get decorated, clothes and textiles need to be replaced.

Each the U.K. dispose of a total of about 650,000 tonnes of textiles each year. Currently, of this only 21% to 35% is reused or recycled. (www.greenchoices.org)

To picture this scenario imagine...

This is, in weight, the estimated quantity of textiles being landfilled.

How re-use of Clothes will help:

1. Textile reuse and recycling saves energy - making polyester and nylon uses a lot of energy

2. Textile reuse and recycling conserves the environment - The production of nylon creates nitrous oxide, a very potent greenhouse gas. The production of cotton is very demanding on the land, so takes away from local peoples food production and it is the most pesticide intensive crop in the world. Most of the processes involved in textiles, including dyeing, bleeching etc are detrimental to the environment.

3. Reuse and recycling of textiles reduces animal exploitation - Intensive farming of individual animals is linked to the production of various textiles such as fur, leather. Silk and wool.

4. Reuse and recycling Textiles creates employment locally - It is well known that working conditions in the clothing industry are an international scandal, it would therefore be beneficial to recycle clothes more and thus, reduce the demand on the clothing market and in turn, the demand on the exploited workers.

5. Reuse and recycling of textiles increases public awareness of the problem of rubbish - Everyone can help the environment by reusing or recycling their textiles, this is a first step toward becoming environmentally aware.

6. Textile reuse and recycling cuts waste disposal costs - It costs significant amounts to dispose of materials in landfill sites especially through maintenance.

Time to go shopping?
Shopping in the charity shops is fast becoming a more than logical choice made by people of all ages. For those that enjoy finding a special 'gem' of an item, your local charity shop can grant that 'well discovered purchase' feeling. Many shops are a treasure trove of fashions from every decade and shopping in them can be a fun break from the monotonous fashions of many high street stores.

Remember if you buy something and aren't happy with it or know you'll never wear it, it can always go back to the charity shop where some one else may make use of it.

Description: Any clothes or textiles, such as curtains or bed linen, that you decide you no longer want or need but believe would be useful to someone else, can be taken to your local charity shop. Any items that cant be resold will be recycled and the fibres will be used elsewhere. It is always best to give the organisation a call before you deliver the items to make sure they have a use for the donation.
